May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. (Romans 15:13)
In the great mystery of the Gospel, Christ made a way for us–His enemies–to find reconciliation with Him. In this chapter, Paul reminds the Believers that whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures–we might have hope (Romans 15:4).
Life is full of trials and tribulations, uncertainties and tragedies. But see the kindness and love of the Lord in that He has given us His Word as a means of cultivating and filling us with hope! I know that I am often forgetful and look to my own wisdom (and suffer for it), but even so, He is gracious to forgive and remind me of His great and precious promises. If it wasn’t for His Holy Spirit living and working in me, I would not be able to endure.
James calls us to be full of joy when we experience trials, knowing that the testing of our faith produces this steadfastness, this endurance. (James 1:2-4)
But it’s only possible to have joy in the midst of trials when we have this hope in Jesus, because He is so much greater, and He has already conquered sin and death at Calvary. When our eyes are fixed on Him, and we trust Him, we no longer look at the present circumstances and have cause to fear, like Peter when he looked into the storm on the water, but we know that – “it is finished!”
Our hope is set firmly not in anything that must still be done, but in what Christ has already accomplished. There is no uncertainty! There is no fear! Any doubts we have do not come from God, but from the Evil One. The Enemy is ever ready to speak his lies to those who will listen, and our deceitful hearts are quick to falter.
Romans 15:13 shatters the very premise of fear and doubt in the face of our trials. How? By revealing the source and power of our hope: God Himself. We cannot endure suffering in our own strength, or create hope by our own ability, but we will endure through faith and by His grace.
It is God who gives us faith and hope in Jesus, and with that hope He fills us with joy and peace as we trust Him. His perfect love casts out all fear. (1 John 4:18)
And to all who have believed, the promised Holy Spirit dwells within us and He is our Helper. It is by His power that we can abound and flourish with hope in Christ Jesus.
I find great comfort in knowing that our hope is in God alone!
Dig deep into the Word of God and let Him fill you with great hope.
